Top 5 Kentucky Derby Horses as of January 27, 2021.
A couple new additions to the Road to the 147th Kentucky Derby. We are still early in the Prep racing schedule as many more are to follow and the higher quality talent will begin pointing toward the higher points races. A few possible contenders may have not even broke their maidens just yet and can still be possible longshots in hopes of the Kentucky Derby.
# 1 Concert Tour
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Owner: Gary and Mary West
Pedigree: Street Sense - Pure Strings by Tapit
Broke his maiden impressively in his first start for trainer, Baffert. Sent off the even-money favorite with Joel Rosario in the irons, Concert Tour dueled with longshot Sensemaker through an opening quarter-mile 22:18. He spurted clear of that rival entering the turn, reached the quarter pole in 45.26 with a 2 1/2-length advantage and then extended the lead in the stretch before being geared down late to win in a final time of 1:10.40.
#2 Caddo River
Trainer: Brad Cox
Owner: Shortleaf Stables Inc.
Pedigree: Hard Spun - Pangburn by Congrats
He broke his maiden and is now on the winning track and attempting to point toward the Kentucky Derby. His most recent win was the Smarty Jones on Oaklawn Park's opening day. Caddo River received a 99 Equibase Speed Figure for his front-running 10 1/4-length victory in the Smarty Jones, the most lopsided result since the one-mile race was inaugurated in 2008.
#3 Essential Quality
Trainer: Brad Cox
Owner: Godolphin
Pedigree: Tapit - Delightful Quality by Elusive Quality
Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Essential Quality, who is expected to be named 2020 champion 2-year-old male at Thursday's Eclipse Awards ceremony, is targeting the Feb. 15 Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park for his 3-year-old debut. A Godolphin homebred by Tapit, Essential Quality was a perfect 3-for-3 last season. He won on debut at Churchill Downs in September and came back a month later to take the Breeders' Futurity (G1) at Keeneland prior to the Breeders' Cup.
#4 Jackie's Warrior
Trainer: Steve Asmussen
Owner: J. Kirk Robison
Pedigree: Maclean's Music - Unicorn Girl by AP Five Hundred
A two time Grade 1 winner (2020 Champagne 2020 Runhappy Hopeful. In his last start he placed fourth in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Keeneland on Nov. 6 for trainer Steve Asmussen.
#5 Prevalence
Trainer: Brendan Walsh
Owner: Godolphin
Pedigree: Medaglia d'Oro - Enrichment by Ghostzapper
First timer making the list here, Prevalence set a dominate performance a loaded 7 furlong maiden at Gulfstream this past weekend. He topped out Stage Raider, a half brother to Justify. Ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, Prevalence at 7-1 odds broke well and grabbed the lead after a quarter mile and battled it out with Stage Raider through the early going. Prevalence entered the stretch with a small lead, but quickly accelerated from the field to win by 8 1/2 lengths in a final time of 1:23.00.
